CHARITY FOR THE REPARATION OF THE CHURCH AND SUSTENTATION OF THE POOR (OTHERWISE KNOWN AS THE CLIFFE FEOFFEES —
CHARITY NUMBER 220487
PROPOSAL TO AMEND CHARITABLE OBJECTIVES
The Cliffe Feoffees Charity was established in 1603 with the twin objectives of maintenance of fabric of St Thomas’ s church and poor relief in Cliffe parish. The Trustees wish to extend the charitable objects to include relief of poverty throughout the town. In order to achieve this the charitable objectives would need to be amended.
The Trustees for the last four hundred years have managed the Charity with maintenance of the Church as its primary object and directed surplus income to relief of poverty in the Parish. In recent years the Trustees have found it increasingly difficult to identify those in need as resident of the Parish. The Trustees therefore wish to extend the objects to include all Lewes town parishes.
The Charity Commission public register displays the following as a summary of the Charity objects;
Repair and maintenance of Cliffe Church Lewes and sustentation of the poor of that parish
The 1603 deed establishing the Charity has the following objects;
“….to the end and intent – that the issues and profits of all and singular the premises should from time to time forever be converted and conferred unto the pious and good works following. viz
For the maintenance reparation & sustentation of the Church of St Thomas aforesaid – on the reparations and emendations of all and singular the premises – and for the relief of the poor who shall from time to time be inhabitants of the Cliffe aforesaid….”
The Trustee propose that the Charity objects are amended to the following;
Maintenance reparation & sustentation of the Church of St Thomas à Becket, Lewes; reparations and emendation of property owned by the Charity; and for the prevention and relief of poverty in the parishes of St Thomas at Cliffe and All Saints, St Anne, Trinity in Lewes, and St Michael, Lewes.
The Trustees would intend to continue to manage the Charity with maintenance of the Church as its primary object.
